Kummattikkali — A captivating mask dance from Kerala!
Kummattikkali is a vibrant and colourful mask dance of Kerala that adds to the festive spirit of Onam.
There is a popular belief that the Kummattikkali ritual resembles the dance of Bhootha Ganas (spiritual entities) of Lord Shiva, performed at His command to welcome King Mahabali. The highlight of Kummattikkali is the wooden mask depicting various characters from mythology, folklore, and daily life as well as the green grass costume worn by the dancers. This unique folk dance and art form is prevalent in Thrissur District, Palakkad District, and parts of South Malabar.
