UNESCO World Heritage Hoysala Temples of Karnataka
UNESCO has officially recognized the Hoysala Temples in Karnataka, as new World Heritage sites.
On September 18, 2023, the 12th century Hoysala era temples of Belur, Halebidu and Somanathapura in Hassan and Mysuru districts — were officially recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This marks India’s 42nd addition to the esteemed World Heritage list and the fourth site in Karnataka to attain this prestigious recognition. The 45th session of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee which was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Monday (September 18, 2023), approved India’s recommendation of the ‘Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas’.
This prestigious recognition comprises three remarkable temples: the Chennakeshava Temple in Belur, the Hoysalesvara Temple in Halebidu (Hassan district), and the Keshava Temple in Somanathpur (Mysuru district).
Built during the illustrious Hoysala era, these architectural wonders showcase a splendid fusion of Nagara and Dravidian styles. Their stone-carved grandeur, unique artistry, and rich sculptural adornments make them one of South India’s iconic gems.
